BLACKBURN N.A.39: Seven pre-production N.A.39 two-seat shipboard low-level strike aircraft are now flying, and development of this aircraft has been remarkably trouble-free. The pre-production version is powered by two 7,000-Ib. s.t. de Havilland Gyron Junior D.G.J.1 turbojets, and the overall dimensions are : Span 42 ft. 6 in.; length 62 ft. 4 in.; height 16 ft.
DE HAVILLAND COMET 4B: Short-range high-density airliner for British European Airways and Olympic Airways, the Comet 4B will carry up to 102 passengers. It is powered by four 10,500-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce Avon R.A.29-1 turbojets. Dimensions: Span 107ft. 9in.; length 118ft. 0in.; height 28 ft. 5 in.
DE HAVILLAND SEA VIXEN F.A.W.1: Additional production orders were placed recently for this two-seat shipboard all-weather strike fighter which has now entered service with the Royal Navy. It is powered by two 10,050-lb. s.t, Rolls-Royce Avon 200 series turbojets, and overall dimensions are: Span 50 ft.; length 53 ft. 6 1/2 in.; height 11 ft.
FAIREY GANNET A.E.W.3: To enter service with the Royal Navy next year as a shipboard early warning aircraft, the Gannet A.E.W.3 has now completed a considerable amount of testing, and a number are flying. It is powered by a 3,875-e.h.p.Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba 112 turboprop, and dimensions are: Span 54 ft. 6in.; length 44 ft.; height 16ft. 10 in.; wing area 490 sq. ft.
HAWKER HUNTER F.R.10: Latest variant of this ubiquitous aircraft, the Hunter F.R.10 retains the standard cannon armament of the F.6 and F.G.A.9 but has a battery of cameras in the nose. It is powered by one 10,050-lb.s.t. Rolls-Royce Avon 203. Dimensions are: Span 33 ft. 8 in.; length 46 ft. 1 in.; height 13 ft. 2in.; wing area 349 sq. ft.
BRISTOL 192 SERIES II: With eight helicopters of this type now flying, the Bristol 192 will shortly join the R.A.F. for trooping, supply, ambulance and rescue operations. Powered by two 1,650-s.h.p. Napier Gazelle Series 2 turbines, its dimensions include a rotor diameter of 48 ft. 8 in.; a fuselage length of 54 ft. 4 in.; and a height of 17 ft.
GLOSTER JAVELIN F.A.W.9 : Essentially the Javelin F.A.W.7 with the retrospective installation of afterburners and some equipment changes, the Javelin F.A.W.9 has two 11,000-lb.s.t. (12,300-lb. with afterburning) Bristol Siddeley Sapphire 200 series turbojets. Dimensions: Span 52 ft.; length 56ft. 9 in.; height 17 ft. 1 in.
ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH A.W.650 ARGOSY: Two examples of this multi-purpose transport are to be seen at Farnborough where the Argosy appears or the first time. It is powered by four 2,100-e.h.p. Rolls-Royce Dart R.Da.7/2 (526) turboprops, and its dimensions are: Span 115 ft.; length 86 ft. 9 in.; height 27 ft.; wing area 1,458 sq. ft.
SCOTTISH AVIATION TWIN PIONEER: Illustrated here in standard form but to be seen at Farnborough in its Series III version with wingtip-mounted electro-magnetic units, the Twin Pioneer III is powered by two 640-h.p. Alvis Leonides 531/8 engines. Overall dimensions are: Span 76 ft. 6in.; length 45 ft. 3 in.; height 13 ft. 8 in.; wing area 670 sq. ft.
HANDLEY PAGE VICTOR B.2: Although there is some doubt regarding the appearance of this latest version of the Victor at Farnborough as we close for press, owing to the recent loss of ihe first machine, it is probable that the second machine will be seen. Four 17,250-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce Conway R.Co.11 turbojets. Dimensions: Span 120ft.; length 114 ft. 11 in.; height 28 ft. 1 1/2 in.
FOLLAND GNAT MK. 1: Now cleared for service with the Indian Air Force, and with deliveries to Finland nearing completion, the Gnat Mk. 1 appears to be nearing the end of its production run, in this country at least. Powered by a 4,850-lb.s.t. Bristol Siddeley Orpheus 701, its dimensions are: Span 22 ft. 2 in.; length 29 ft. 9 in.; height 8 ft. 10 in.; wing area 136.6 sq. ft.
FOLLAND GNAT TRAINER: Another of Farnborough's debutantes, the Gnat Trainer was scheduled to fly for the first time as we closed for press. Fourteen for R.A.F. evaluation will be delivered next year. These will be powered by the 4,230-lb. s.t. Bristol Siddeley Orpheus 100. Dimensions: Span 24 ft.; length 30ft. 9 in.; height 10ft. 3 in.; wing area 75 sq. ft.
AVRO VULCAN B.2: This progressive development ol the Vulcan B.I is appearing at Farnborough for the second year in succession, and is expected to enter service next year. It is powered by four 16,000-lb. s.t. Bristol Siddeley Olympus 200 Series turbojets, and overall dimensions are: Span 111 ft.; length 93 ft. 4 in.; height 27 ft. 6 in.
ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING F.A.W.1: Soon to join R.A.F. Fighter Command, the production Lightning F.A.W.1 is now flying although a pre-production machine is on view at Farnborough. It is powered by two Rolls Royce Avon R.A.24R turbojets each rated at 11,250-lb.s.t., and 14,500-lb. with afterburning. Dimensions: Span 34 ft. 10 in.; length, 50 ft.; height, 19 ft. 5 in.
BRISTOL BRITANNIA 253: Another newcomer to Farnborough is this military transport which is entering service with No. 99 Squadron. Powered by four 4,445-e.h.p. Bristol Siddeley Proteus 255 turboprops, its dimensions are as follows: Span 142 ft. 3i in.; length 124 ft. 3 in.; height 36 ft. in.; wing area 2,075 sq. ft.
HANDLEY PAGE H.P.R.7 HERALD: To serve with B.E.A. on certain routes in Scotland, the Herald has not previously appeared at Farnborough in turbine-powered form. Two Heralds are to be seen, these being powered by two 2,105-e.h.p. Rolls-Royce Dart R.Da.7/2 turboprops. Dimensions: Span 94 ft. 9 1/2 in.; length 71 ft. 11 in.; height 22 ft. 4 in.; wing area 886 sq. ft.
SAUNDERS-ROE P.531 MK. 2: Featuring an extensively redesigned fuselage and a skid-type undercarriage, the P.531 Mk. 2 has a de-rated Blackburn A.129, and flew for the first time last month. Another P.531 has a de-rated de Havilland Gnome. The overall dimensions of the P.531 include a rotor diameter of 32 ft. 6 in., and an overall height of 9 ft. 6 in.
WESTLAND WESSEX: Another of the Westland range of helicopters to be seen at Farnborough is the Wessex which is to be used by the Royal Navy in the anti-submarine role. Powered by a 1,450-s.h.p. Napier Gazelle N.Ga.3 gas turbine, its overall dimensions are: Rotor diameter 56ft.; fuselage length 65 ft. 9i in.; height 14 ft. 3 3/4 in.
FAIREY ROTODYNE: Now having its wings set at a new angle of incidence and fitted with ailerons, the Rotodyne is powered by two 3,000-e.h.p. Napier Eland turboprops, and its overall dimensions include a rotor diameter of 104 ft., a fuselage length of 64 ft. 6 in., and an overall height of 23 ft. 2 in.
SHORT S.C.1: As we close for press it is hoped that this interesting V.T.O.L. aircraft will be flown over from Bedford to demonstrate its capabilities, although a transition had not been effected at the time of writing. The S.C.1 has five 1,810-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce R.B.108 turbojets, and overall dimensions are: Span. 23 ft. 6 in.; length 24 ft. 5 in., (including pitot head) 29 ft. 10in.
ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING TRAINER: Apart from the forward fuselage, the Lightning Trainer is identical to the single-seat F.A.W.1, and it is likely to be developed as an operational aircraft in its own right. It is powered by a pair of 11,250-lb.s.t. (14,500lb. with afterburning) Rolls-Royce Avon R.A.24Rs. Dimensions: Span 34 ft. 10 In.; length 50 ft.; height 19 ft. 5 in.
VICKERS VANGUARD 951: Another Farnborough debutante, this aircraft now sports a sizeable dorsal fin. B.E.A. is scheduled to receive its first aircraft in March. The initial model is powered by four 4,795-e.h.p. Rolls-Royce Tyne R.Ty.1 turboprops, and overall dimensions are: Span 118ft.; length 112 ft. 10 3/4 in.; height 34 ft. 11 in.; wing area 1,529 sq. ft.
HUNTING JET PROVOST T.3: Now in service with the R.A.F., the Jet Provost T.3 can be seen at Farnborough in its standard and export forms, the latter being the Jet Provost T.51 for Ceylon. The Jet Provost T.4 has the more powerful Viper A.S.V.II. The Jet Provost T.3 has a 1,750-lb. s.t. Bristol Siddeley Viper 102 turbojet, and dimensions are: Span 36 ft. 11 in.; length 32ft. 5 in.; height 10ft. 2 in.; wing area 213.7 sq.ft.
AUSTER AIGLET: No newcomer to Farnborough, the Aiglet Trainer maintains its position as the most popular British light aircraft. Exported in substantial numbers, it is powered by a 145-h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 10 engine. Dimensions are: Span 32 ft.; length 23 ft. 2 in.; height 6 It. 6 in.; wing area 164 sq. ft.
SUPERMARINE SCIMITAR F.1: Displayed in its photo-reconnaissance form with ihe P.R. nose as shown by the drawing, the Scimitar F.1 now serves with Nos. 803 and 807 Naval Air Squadrons. The nose is easily interchangeable with the standard fighter nose. It is powered by two 11,250-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce Avon 200 series engines, and dimensions are: Span 37 ft. 2 in.; length 55 ft. 4 in.; height 15 ft.
HAWKER HUNTER MK. 66A : The version of the Hunter Trainer for the Indian Air Force, the Hunter Mk. 66A, is more powerful than the Hunter T.7 of the R.A.F., and possesses a higher performance. It has the 10,050-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce Avon 200 series turbojet, and overall dimensions are: Span 33 ft. 8 in.; length 48 ft. 10 1/2 in.; height 13 ft. 2 in.; wing area 349 sq. ft.
ENGLISH ELECTRIC CANBERRA P.R.9 : Featuring a new nose housing a redesigned navigator's "office" with lightweight Martin-Baker ejector seat, the Canberra P.R.9 is powered by two 10,050-lb. s.t. Rolls-Royce Avon 206 turbojets. Dimensions are: Span 69 ft. 5 in.; length 66 ft. 8 in.; height 15 ft. 7 in.
WESTLAND WESTMINSTER: Two Westminsters are to be seen at Farnborough, the first of them being illustrated above. The Westminster has two 3,150-s.h.p. Napier Eland 229 shaft-drive gas turbines, and its overall dimensions include a rotor diameter of 72ft., a fuselage length of 71 ft. 4 in., and a height of 22 ft. 3 in.
