   В ответ на техническое задание (спецификация E.1/44) Министерства авиации на одноместный истребитель с реактивным двигателем "Gloster" приступила к разработке и постройке прототипа машины, оснащенного ТРД с центробежным компрессором, разрабатывавшимся фирмой "Rolls-Royce". Gloster E.1/44, свободнонесущий среднеплан цельнометаллической конструкции с трехстоечным шасси, был оснащен новым ТРД, названным Nene и установленным в хвостовой части фюзеляжа.
   К сожалению, первый прототип (SM809) был поврежден в аварии при транспортировке в испытательный центр в Боскомб Даун. Поэтому первым в воздух 9 марта 1948 года поднялся второй прототип (TX145). Был построен и третий прототип, TX148, а вот постройку четвертого (TX150) прекратили, так как стало ясно, что машина не имеет потенциала для дальнейшего совершенствования, по всем параметрам проигрывая двухдвигательному Meteor.

The third prototype Gloster E.1/44 in company with the prototype Meteor F.8. VT150 was a modified F.4 airframe with cockpit canopy and restyled tailplane almost identical to those of the E.1/44.

Three-view of the second airframe TX145 which, after the irreparable damage to SM809 in a road accident, became the first GA.2 to fly. In appearance it was almost identical to SM809 apart from the rudder horn-balance on the first airframe.
