This Gloster Meteor I, EE 227, was to become the world's first turboprop aircraft to fly when, on 30 September 1945, Gloster's Eric Greenwood was to take it aloft on the power of two 750eshp and 1.000lb s.t. Rolls-Royce Trents. Later, when fitted with smaller diameter propellers, these figures shifted to 350eshp and 1.400lb s.t. The Trent was a Derwent II modified to take a forward drive shaft, a reduction gearbox and a five-bladed propeller. While the Trent was not a success in itself, its development and flight testing contributed materially to the early emergence of its successor, the Rolls-Royce Dart.

The Trent-Meteor in flight, with the starboard engine closed down and the propeller feathered. The extra fin area, in the form of small surfaces on the tailplane leading edge, was needed for directional stability with the propeller installation.

The Trent Meteor, modified Mk.III EE227, was the world's first turboprop.
